Do you feel like you are living with ants rather than at home? Settled in the house or the garden, getting rid of ants is never an easy task. And in addition, there are several species that are not always sensitive to the same repellents! So how do you avoid seeing an ant trotting on its work plan without having to resort to an arsenal of toxic products? Here are our best anti-ant grandmother recipes!

Spot the anthill so you don't forget any ant!

Generally, we do not know these small insects very well and we do not try to find out more. Our # 1 priority: get rid of it! Except that by knowing them better, it is much easier to keep the anthill away. By attacking only visible ants, you are exposed to a new infestation. Many ant births are already scheduled - and even in progress! Some ants stay in the nest to take care of the queen and the larvae, well hidden between the walls or in small nooks, and will come out in their turn to search for food. Before using any product, find out what attracted the ants and what they are looking for. They can come and get food, like a warm space, away from light. Then follow the ants to locate the anthill. You will thus have an overview of the area to be treated and avoid new infestations.

More access to food: more ants!

You have undoubtedly already noticed their displacement "with the tail leu leu", characteristic of the ants. If they all take the same path, it is not for lack of personality or efficiency! When an ant goes on an expedition, it deposits pheromones on its route. A marking that works like a breadcrumb, to always find its way back to the nest, or find a source of food easily. The other ants in the nest only have to follow the route traced to the pantry, thanks to the indications left! To get rid of ants, we start by making food inaccessible. For example, use glass jars, very trendy and airtight. And to confuse the tracks, we clean the places of ants' passage with water and black soap (or vinegar). They will no longer be able to identify themselves. Make sure all surfaces are clean: crumbs or sugar can attract ants.

Anti-ants to drive away the anthill

To scare away ants, they have to make their environment much less pleasant. Locate the entrance to the anthill and pour a few drops of lemon or lavender essential oil. You can also block all possible entries with wet coffee grounds. These strong-smelling products are hardly appreciated by ants, which are thus forced to move. For more efficiency, you can combine these tips. There are 160 species of ants in France, and not all of them are sensitive to the same products! If the problem persists you can also create bait. The ants will bring the poisoned food back to the nest, and will kill the whole anthill. Mix baking soda and sugar in a cup. Ants will be attracted and will not differentiate between the two products, which they will transport and ingest. You can also opt for a mixture of sugar and boric acid, a more powerful but toxic product! In this case, be very careful to leave it away from your children and pets.

Avoid ants in the house

Now that you've got rid of the anthill, you're not done! If the space is not regularly treated with repellents, it will again become attractive to ants. And a new anthill may settle there later. To prevent the return of ants, regularly sprinkle the old anthill with lemon juice or a mixture of water and essential oils of lemon and lavender. You can also leave a dish with wet coffee grounds. Also treat cracks and any access they may have, to prevent them from entering and then settling. One last tip: check the presence of ants in the pots of your plants. We sometimes bring it in at home without realizing it, coming back from the garden center!

Ants in the garden: what to do?

When ants settle in the garden, the question is a little different. It is important to preserve biodiversity and avoid toxic products. In addition to being dangerous for children and animals, they can also kill ants' predators. Especially since ants have their utility in the garden: they clean up by decomposing organic waste, aerate the soil and feed on other insects, larvae and eggs also considered harmful ... The ant is hardworking! On the other hand, ants raise aphids for the honeydew that they secrete and protect them from their predators. For ants to become your allies in the garden, simply select the plants that will need to be protected from aphids and ants. Add damp coffee grounds to the base, which will also repel slugs. And in addition to repelling insects, it is an excellent fertilizer for plants! You can also let a lemon mold at the foot of the plants most vulnerable to ants or cultivate next to lavender, a plant that ants do not like!
